Ready, Set, Snow! Kick Off Ski Season with Over The Top Racks & Accessories | Kelowna, BC.
It’s that time of year again! The mountains are calling, the snow is falling, and the stoke is real. Whether you’re a seasoned powder chaser or a bunny slope beginner, ski season is officially here—and we couldn’t be more excited at Over The Top Racks & Accessories!
But before you toss your gear in the car and head for the hills, let’s talk about the unsung hero of your winter adventures: your trusty ski and snowboard rack. Your rack is more than just a piece of gear; it’s the backbone of your snowy escapades, making sure your precious planks and boards arrive safe and sound. So, let’s give it the TLC it deserves with these essential tips.
Pre-Season Rack Prep | What You Need to Know
1. Clean Slate, Clean Ride
Dust off the cobwebs—literally. After months of summer storage, your rack may have accumulated debris, dirt, or even a few rogue bugs. Clean it thoroughly with a mild soap and water solution, ensuring no grime is left to scratch your gear or your car’s finish. And while you’re at it, don’t forget the mounting surface! Whether you’re attaching your rack to a bare roof, raised rails, or flush rails, make sure the area is spotless to prevent debris from causing damage.
2. Inspect for Wear and Tear
Your ski rack takes a beating from the elements each winter, so give it a good once-over before reinstalling. Check for stress cracks, abnormal wear and tear, or any damage that might have happened during storage. Look closely at straps, bolts, and locking mechanisms, and replace missing or damaged parts and repair components as needed. A little preventive maintenance now can save you from a mountain of headaches later.
3. Lubricate Lock Cylinders
Salt, dirt, and freezing temperatures can wreak havoc on your lock cylinders. Keep them operating smoothly with a dab of white lithium grease. We’re fans of a thick pack to create a barrier against the winter grime and ensure effortless operation all season long.
Leave It to the Pros

The Hike to Christie falls
SOfT-Roading Up Bear Main to Christie Falls
There are days made for adventure — and this one checked all the boxes. A road less travelled, getting the blood pumping with an epic hike, mountain views and a waterfall. Here’s how it all went down when we took the Tacoma up Bear Main and hiked into Christie Falls for one epic day in September.
The DRIVE Up Bear Main
The adventure started where the pavement ended. Bear Main Forest Service Road located on Kelowna’s West Side, winds its way up through the forest fire burn, and back into lush forest. The Tacoma ate up every bump, rut, and rocky climb along the way. The drive to the trail head takes you to an unassuming plateau where you start your hike in to Christie Falls.
Trail to Christie Falls
After parking the truck, we hit the trail. It’s not a long hike to Christie Falls, but it’s packed with character: a winding trail through the trees with roots, rock faces, switchbacks, creek crossings and finally a series of climbing ropes to guide your decent as you repel down the last stretch to get to the base of the waterfall. It’s quite a sight to see such a tall waterfall in the Okanagan… it was truly awe inspiring, watching the water spilling over the rocky cliff face. If you are planning to go, keep in mind the spring melt is more spectacular than end of season flow.
At the Bottom
Navigating the giant boulders at the base of the waterfall, slimy and soaked in spray, we felt tiny compared to the sheer cliff. The reward? Pure magic — the kind of view you can’t really capture in a photo (though we tried!). A quick break to explore the caves under the waterfall, with snacks and laughter, then the climb back up.
The Ride Out
By the time we packed up and rolled out, the sun was dropping low, painting the valley a cool pink. The Tacoma carried us back down Bear Main without missing a beat, the dust settling behind us as the day wrapped up with a few more pin stripes to tell the tale.
Final Thoughts
This trip was the perfect blend of everything we love: off-roading, hiking, adventure, guts, glory and waterfalls, and the kind of wild BC scenery that never gets old. Christie Falls delivered in a big way - an epic destination if you’ve never been.
Until the next adventure

BCOR 2025: Our weekend at heartland ranch
What a weekend! We polished up the shop truck, packed up and hit the road for the shortest road trip of life - rolling into Heartland Ranch for the BC Overland Rally 2025. From the minute we pulled in, the place was alive — rigs lining up, rooftop tents everywhere, and the unmistakable buzz of a community that loves adventure as much as we do.
Arrival Day
We set up camp and our vendor booth under perfect September skies. Heartland Ranch yet again did not disappoint and provided the ultimate backdrop for the event — with wide-open fields, mountains all around, and just enough dust to remind you this wasn’t a city tradeshow.
Our Booth in Action
Our booth quickly turned into a hangout spot:
Families checking out our loaded rigs and rooftop tents (kids LOVE climbing up for a test run).
Guests entering our giveaways to win a Pelican TX50 Case and RFX Portable Compressor!
Vendors swapping stories and checking out truck accessories.
We loved seeing people not just look at gear, but really get hands-on with it and be inspired. That’s what makes events like BCOR special.
Around the Ranch
When we weren’t at the booth, we wandered around and soaked it all in:
Workshops on recovery gear, overland cooking, and rig setups.
Trail runs that showed off just what these rigs (and their drivers) can do.
Evenings by the fire — nothing beats the Raffle, the vibe is incredible! “BURN IT!”
Food Trucks — grabbing some yummy tacos!
Favorite Moments
The nightly raffle is not to be missed.
We donated a Treeline Outdoors unisex urinal as one of our prizes and they announced it as a water bottle. Do NOT drink the apple juice!
Catching up with other vendors and checking out the latest in the overland world.
Why We Loved It (and Why We’ll Be Back)
BCOR isn’t just another event. It’s a gathering of people who live for adventure. The dust, the laughter, the gear talk, the campfire nights — it all reminded us why we do what we do and the connection to our fellow Vendors, our clients all of whom are first and foremost… friends.
A huge thank-you to everyone who volunteered and organized the event! Also to all who attended, stopped by our booth, asked questions, shared your rigs, got active on socials, and inspired us with your stories, we see and appreciate you!
Until next year — keep the racks loaded, the gear ready, and the adventures rolling.

Choosing The Perfect Tonneau Cover For Your Truck | A Guide From Kelowna’s Experts
When it comes to equipping your truck with a tonneau cover, the options can feel as vast as the open road. At Over The Top Racks & Accessories, we’ve been helping truck owners pick the perfect covers for years, and we’re here to break it all down for you. From enhanced fuel efficiency to added security, a tonneau cover is more than just a stylish add-on—it’s a game-changer for your truck’s functionality and aesthetics.
Why Invest in a Tonneau Cover?
A tonneau cover isn’t just a luxury; it’s an essential accessory for your truck. Here’s why:
1. Improved Fuel Efficiency
A covered truck bed reduces aerodynamic drag, leading to better fuel consumption. Over time, that’s money back in your pocket—and who doesn’t love fewer stops at the pump?
2. Enhanced Security
Protect your cargo from prying eyes and sticky fingers. Hard covers, in particular, like those from Retrax, Bak, and Undercover, provide robust protection for valuables.
3. Style Points
Let’s face it: a sleek tonneau cover elevates the look of your truck. Whether you choose a hard or soft option, the clean lines and tailored fit make your rig stand out.
Types of Tonneau Covers
There are several tonneau cover styles to fit your needs. Here’s a quick rundown:
1. Retractable Covers
Brands like Retrax or Roll n’ Lock offer smooth-operating retractable covers that slide effortlessly into place. They’re perfect for those who need quick and easy access to their truck bed. Lock it in at whatever interval suits your load.
2. Hard and Soft Folding Covers
If versatility is your priority, folding covers from Bak and Undercover provide options that are lightweight yet durable. Choose between hard or soft materials based on your cargo security needs.
3. Soft and Hard Rolling Covers
Roll-up covers, like those from Bak and Truxedo, combine functionality with style. Roll them out for full bed coverage or roll them back when you need the entire bed free.
Rack Compatibility | Transport Gear Like a Pro
Do you need to carry kayaks, rooftop tents, or construction materials? Pairing your tonneau cover with the right rack system ensures maximum utility. Here are some standout options:
Truxedo Elevate Rack: Offers adjustable height options for versatile cargo solutions.
Yakima OverHaul and Outpost HD: Perfect for rooftop tents or heavy-duty gear.
Adarac Systems: Great for low, mid, or cab-height setups to suit your hauling needs.
These systems are designed to work seamlessly with certain tonneau covers, making them an unbeatable combo for overlanders, contractors, and weekend warriors alike. Even if a rack isn’t necessarily on your priority list right away, future proofing is important. Pick the right cover that will be compatible with potential needs down the road if and when the time comes to rack it out.
Why Proper Installation Matters
A tonneau cover is only as good as its installation. At Over The Top Racks & Accessories, we pride ourselves on precision installs. Proper fitting ensures:
Proper drain tube installation.
Minimal leaks, even during heavy rain.
Smooth operation for years to come.
Maximum security for your cargo.
And don’t forget—when you purchase a RealTruck bed cover, you can double your warranty with our help. Just ask us how!
Ready to Level Up Your Truck?
Choosing the right tonneau cover isn’t just about picking a style; it’s about enhancing your truck’s performance, utility, and looks. At Over The Top Racks & Accessories, we’re here to guide you every step of the way, from selection to installation and beyond - for this truck and all your rigs down the road. Choosing the Right Kayak Rack | Expert Tips from Over The Top Racks & Accessories in kelowna, BC
Choosing the Right Kayak Rack
If you're an avid kayaker or just dipping your paddle into the world of water adventures, transporting your kayak safely and efficiently is key to a hassle-free experience. At Over The Top Racks & Accessories, we’ve seen it all—from the triumphant grins of first-time paddlers to seasoned pros seeking an upgrade. Choosing the right kayak rack isn’t just about getting your boat from point A to point B; it’s about ensuring your kayak and your vehicle stay safe along the way. Let’s dive into the essentials.
Why the Right Rack Matters
Kayaks come in all shapes, sizes, and weights. Whether you own a lightweight recreational kayak or a robust sea kayak, the rack you choose must be capable of handling its weight and dimensions. Brands like Yakima and Thule, which we proudly stock and install, offer a range of premium options designed to carry everything from a solo kayak to a full fleet.
Key Factors to Consider:
Weight Capacity: Always check the rack’s weight rating and ensure it can support your kayak. Exceeding the weight limit risks damage to your vehicle, your rack, and—most importantly—your kayak.
Proper Securing: Properly securing your kayak is non-negotiable. This means using straps to secure the boat across the rack and additional bow and stern tie-downs to prevent your boat from becoming a projectile if things go sideways. Trust us—the extra effort is worth it for peace of mind, compliance with safety standards and to maintain your manufacturer’s warranty.
Rack Types | Lift Assist, J-Cradles, and Saddles
Not all kayak racks are created equal, and the right one for you depends on your kayak, vehicle, and personal preferences. Let’s break down the options:
1. Lift or Load-Assist Racks:
If hoisting a kayak onto your roof sounds like a gym workout you’d rather skip, lift-assist systems like the Thule Hullavator Pro or Yakima ShowDown are game-changers. These racks lower to the side of your vehicle, reducing the lifting height by up to 40 inches. They’re perfect for solo adventurers, people with mobility issues or anyone with heavier kayaks.
2. J-Cradles:
Space-saving and secure, J-cradles like the Yakima JayLow or Thule Hull-a-Port hold your kayak on its side, leaving room for additional gear. They’re great for vehicles with narrower roofs and paddlers looking to transport multiple kayaks. Your hull will thank you.
3. Saddles and Rollers:
For a smooth and snug fit, saddle and roller systems like the Thule DockGlide or Yakima SweetRoll are ideal. These racks cradle the bottom of the kayak, allowing for easy loading and unloading, especially for longer boats. Rollers are particularly useful if you’re loading from the rear of your vehicle.
Why Professional Installation Matters
At Over The Top Racks & Accessories, we’re more than just a retailer—we’re your go-to experts for professional installs. A properly installed rack is crucial to ensuring your kayak stays secure and your vehicle’s roof stays intact. Our team ensures:
Correct rack placement to evenly distribute weight.
Secure installation of load-assist mechanisms, J-cradles, or saddles.
Guidance and a demo on tying down your kayak properly, including bow and stern lines.
Don’t have a proper tie town? We have options.
We’ve helped countless adventurers gear up, and our expertise ensures your kayak adventures start and end without a hitch (except the one we expertly install, of course).
Adventure Awaits
Choosing the right kayak rack is an investment in your kayaking experience. With trusted brands like Yakima and Thule, you’re not just buying a rack—you’re gaining peace of mind and a hassle-free journey to the water for the foreseeable future. Stop by Over The Top Racks & Accessories, where adventure meets expertise, and let us help you gear up for your next great paddling adventure.
Your kayak deserves the best. And so do you.
Choosing The Right Bike Rack, Hitch-Mounted, Roof-Mounted, or Strap Rack | Kelowna, BC
When it comes to finding the perfect bike rack, the choices can be overwhelming. Should you go for a hitch-mounted rack, a roof-mounted rack, or a strap rack? And which brands should you trust with your precious two-wheeled steed? At Over The Top Racks & Accessories, we’ve seen it all, installed it all, and know the ins and outs of premium bike racks like Yakima, Thule, Kuat, Swagman, and RockyMounts. Here’s our breakdown to help you make the best choice for your needs.
Hitch-Mounted Racks | The Gold Standard for Versatility
If you’ve got a hitch on your vehicle, hitch-mounted racks are hard to beat. They’re convenient, versatile, and can handle a variety of bike styles, including heavier mountain, gravel, and e-bikes. They also offer up a low loading zone and maintain your roof clearance.
Key Benefits:
Weight Capacity: Most platform hitch racks, especially those from Kuat, Thule, Yakima, and Swagman are designed to support e-bikes and other heavier rides, with weight limits often reaching up to 80 lbs per bike.
Platform or Hanging Style: Platform racks like the Kuat NV 2.0 or the Yakima StageTwo offer secure, wheel-grabbing mechanisms that keep your bikes rock steady. These are especially great for bikes with unconventional frames or larger tires and can be RV approved.
Ease of Use: Loading and unloading is a breeze—no need to hoist bikes onto the roof or fiddle with straps if you choose a platform rack.
Best For:
E-bikes, mountain bikes, and gravel bikes.
Riders with high end, multiple bikes.
Drivers who want quick and easy access to their bikes.
At our shop, we also specialize in hitch installs to ensure your setup has a sturdy foundation, suitable for your needs from the get-go.
Roof-Mounted Racks |Perfect for Lightweight Bikes
Roof-mounted racks are a sleek solution for those who want to keep their hitch free to tow or have a sportier vehicle and prefer a more aerodynamic look. They are ideal for transporting lighter to lift road or race bikes that can be hoisted onto your roof. Brands like Thule and Yakima excel in this category - providing safe, stylish and functional solutions.
Key Benefits:
Vehicle Accessibility: Keep your rear hatch or trunk clear.
Modular Design: Use your roof rack for other gear like kayaks, skis, or cargo boxes as a multi-sport system or when you’re not hauling bikes.
Secure Fit: Modern models, like the Thule UpRide or the Yakima HighRoad, use wheel-grabbing systems to hold your bike securely without touching the frame.
Considerations:
Requires lifting your bike overhead, which might be challenging for some.
Risk of damage to the vehicle while loading and unloading.
Not suitable for heavier bikes.
Adds height to your vehicle, so watch out for low clearances like garages and the drive-thru.
Best For:
Lightweight bikes like road or gravel bikes.
Vehicles with pre-existing crossbars.
Strap Racks | Budget-Friendly and Portable
Strap racks, like those offered by Yakima and Thule, are a great entry-level option for occasional riders or those on a budget.
Key Benefits:
Affordability: Strap racks are typically the most budget-friendly option.
Portability: Lightweight and easy to store when not in use.
Universal Fit: Most models fit a variety of vehicle types, even sedans without hitches or roof bars.
Considerations:
Lower weight capacity.
Obstructs access to your trunk or hatch.
May require more frequent adjustments to keep secure.
Sits on the paint, so possible damage with prolonged use or if not properly installed.
Requires frequent removal and reinstallation.
Best For:
Casual riders or those with fewer or lighter bikes.
Vehicles without hitches or roof racks.
Why Weight and Mounting Compatibility Matter
Choosing the right bike rack isn’t just about convenience—it’s about safety and protecting your investments. Bikes come in all shapes and sizes, so it’s crucial to:
Match Weight Capacity: Heavy-duty racks from brands like Kuat, Yakima, RockyMounts, Swagman and Thule are a must for e-bikes and mountain bikes.
Choose the Right Mounting Style: Platform racks or wheel-grabbing systems are ideal for bikes with fragile frames or wide tires, ensuring a snug fit without damage.
Account for Vehicle Design: Make sure the rack you choose works with your vehicle’s setup, whether it’s a hitch, roof bars or neither.

Hard-shell vs. Soft-shell rooftop tents | the ultimate guide from the experts in kelowna, bc
At Over The Top Racks & Accessories, we’ve installed and tested rooftop tents from premium brands like iKamper, Overland Vehicle Systems, Yakima, Thule Tepui, RoofNest, and Treeline Outdoors. Choosing between a hard-shell and a soft-shell rooftop tent isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s about aligning the tent’s features with your adventure style, vehicle setup, and overall needs. Let’s dive into the key differences to help you decide which type of tent deserves a spot on your rig.
Hard-Shell Rooftop Tents | The Pros and Cons
Hard-shell rooftop tents, such as those from iKamper and RoofNest, have gained popularity among overlanders and travelers for good reasons:
Advantages:
Aerodynamics and Efficiency: Hard-shell tents feature sleek, low-profile designs that reduce wind resistance, improving fuel economy compared to soft-shell tents.
Ease of Setup: Most hard-shell tents can be deployed in under a minute, making them perfect for adventurers who value convenience.
Durability: The hard exterior offers superior longevity as well as protection from the elements, be it heavy rain, snow, or intense UV rays.
Comfort: Many hard-shell models include high-quality mattresses and better insulation for year-round use.
Rack-a-bility: Most have crossbars that come standard or available separately to carry additional gear on top of the tent.
Disadvantages:
Cost: Premium engineering and materials come at a price, often making hard-shell tents more expensive.
Weight: Hard-shell tents are typically heavier, requiring a sturdy rack and potentially affecting vehicle handling as well as exceeding safe operating limits.
Space: While efficient, most hard-shells lack the expansive living space and annex options of their soft-shell counterparts.
Capacity: Typically they sleep fewer and have limited space to store and transport bedding inside.
Soft-Shell Rooftop Tents |The Pros and Cons
Soft-shell rooftop tents, like those from Overland Vehicle Systems and Treeline Outdoors, remain a favourite for families and off-road adventurers:
Advantages:
Versatility: These tents often include (or have available) annex rooms, creating additional living and storage space for gear or guests.
Lighter Weight: Soft-shell tents are generally lighter, making them a viable option for smaller vehicles or fully loaded overland vehicles.
Affordability: They deliver excellent value, providing more sleeping space at a lower cost.
Compact Packing: When folded, these tents offer a relatively small footprint for transport, something to consider from an aesthetic perspective or functionally on a low bed pickup rack.
Disadvantages:
Setup Time: While not difficult, setting up a soft-shell tent usually takes a few extra minutes.
Weather Resistance: Soft-shells are more prone to wear and tear from prolonged exposure to rain, snow, and UV rays.
Aerodynamics: Their larger packed size can increase wind resistance, impacting fuel efficiency.
The Foundation | Why Your Rack Matters
Regardless of your tent choice, the most critical factor for safety and performance is your vehicle’s rack foundation. Here’s why:
Dynamic Load: This refers to the tent’s weight plus the forces generated while driving. A robust rack is essential to handle this stress without compromising vehicle stability.
Static Load: When parked and the tent is in use, the rack must support the combined weight of the tent, occupants, and any gear. Premium brands like Yakima, Thule, and Rhino-Rack are designed specifically for these loads.
Off-Road Durability: If you’re taking your setup off the beaten path, the rack must withstand additional stresses from uneven terrain and vibrations as few are guaranteed off the pavement - it’s better to overdo it, than underdo it.
At Over The Top Racks & Accessories, we’ll match your rooftop tent with a rack system built to handle your adventures. Our team ensures proper installation, accounting for dynamic and static loads to give you peace of mind on and off the road.
Final Thoughts | Which Tent is Right for You?
The choice between hard-shell and soft-shell rooftop tents boils down to your priorities. If you’re an overlander seeking fast setups and all-weather durability, a hard-shell tent from iKamper or RoofNest might be your best bet. On the other hand, if you need extra space for family camping trips or want a more budget-friendly option, consider a soft-shell tent from Overland Vehicle Systems or Treeline Outdoors.
Still unsure? Swing by our shop and let our experienced team guide you. From helping you choose the perfect tent to ensuring a rock-solid rack foundation, we’ve got you covered. Adventure is calling—make sure you’re ready to answer.
Overhang Crossbars vs. Flush Bars | What’s Right for you and Your Adventures Around the Okanagan?
If you’re gearing up to outfit your vehicle for your next escapade, you’ve likely come across two popular crossbar styles: overhang crossbars and flush bars. While both are excellent options for carrying cargo, bikes, kayaks, and more, the right choice depends on your specific needs, vehicle, budget, and aesthetic preferences. Let’s break it down.
Overhang Crossbars |The Pros and Cons
Pros:
Maximum Load Width: Overhang crossbars extend beyond the width of your vehicle’s roof, giving you extra space to mount gear. This is particularly useful for large items or when you need to carry multiple accessories simultaneously.
Versatility: The extended length makes it easier to mix and match gear, like a kayak rack on one side and a bike rack on the other.
Universal Fit: Overhang crossbars tend to fit a wider variety of vehicles and accessories, making them a flexible choice if you’re upgrading or swapping vehicles.
Price: Overhang bars are typically less expensive than the more sleek alternative.
Cons:
Aesthetic Impact: The overhanging design can look bulky or out of place on sleeker vehicles, disrupting the streamlined look.
Potential Clearance Issues: The extended edges may be more prone to hitting obstacles like garage doors or low-hanging branches.
Wind Noise: The protruding edges can generate more wind noise compared to flush bars, though this can be mitigated with aerodynamic designs.
Flush Bars |The Pros and Cons
Pros:
Sleek Design: Flush bars sit flush with the roof rails, creating a clean, low-profile look that blends seamlessly with your vehicle.
Improved Aerodynamics: The compact design reduces wind resistance, leading to quieter rides and possibly better fuel efficiency.
Reduced Overhang: With no protruding ends, you’re less likely to bump into obstacles or snag on branches.
Cons:
Limited Load Space: The shorter width may restrict how much gear you can mount, particularly for wider items like kayaks or cargo boxes.
Accessory Compatibility: Some accessories may require more space than flush bars provide, limiting your options.
Vehicle-Specific Fit: Flush bars are often designed for specific vehicles, so they’re less versatile if you change vehicles or need to share them with another car.
Price: Typically Flush bars are more expensive than bars that overhang.
Which One Should You Choose?
Choose Overhang Crossbars If you need maximum versatility and cargo space for carrying multiple or oversized items. These are a great choice for adventure enthusiasts with lots of gear or families planning extended road trips and value the most future proof setup for use and transferability.
Choose Flush Bars If you prioritize aesthetics, aerodynamics, and a quieter ride. These are ideal for daily commuters or anyone who wants a more integrated, low-profile look for their vehicle who are not as budget concerned.
Final Thoughts

The ultimate guide to choosing the right cargo box for your adventures| Kelowna, BC
Welcome to Over The Top Racks & Accessories, your go-to experts for all things rooftop storage! Whether you're gearing up for a weekend ski trip, a cross-country camping adventure, or simply need extra space for the family road trip, choosing the right cargo box is crucial. With industry leaders like Yakima and Thule at the forefront, there's no shortage of premium options to fit your needs. But how do you pick the perfect cargo box for your vehicle, budget, and gear? Let’s dive in!
1. Know Your Gear
Start by assessing what you’ll be hauling. Are you packing skis, snowboards, tents, or just a lot of suitcases? The type and size of your gear will determine the internal capacity and length of the cargo box you need. For example:
Winter sports enthusiasts: Look for boxes like the Yakima SkyBox NX 16 or Thule Motion 3 that accommodate skis and snowboards up to 185cm.
Campers and families: Opt for larger models like the Yakima CBX 18 or Thule Force XT XXL to store tents, sleeping bags, and duffels.
Pro Tip: Always check the maximum weight capacity of the box and your roof rack to ensure safety. Deducting the weight of the box and racks from overall specified limit will give you the allowable contents. Sometimes the box will also have max weight for contents, which could be lower that the standard calculation. If in doubt - It’s best to read the instructions and adhere to manufacturer’s specifications.
2. Match the Box to Your Vehicle
Not all vehicles are created equal, and neither are cargo boxes. Here’s what to keep in mind:
Height: If you drive a tall vehicle like an SUV or van, consider the overall height with the box installed. Will it clear parking garages or drive-thru lanes? Yakima’s streamlined designs like the GrandTour Lo keep a low profile.
Length: Compact cars may need shorter boxes to avoid overhang issues. The Thule Pulse M is a fantastic option for hatchbacks and sedans.
Hatch Clearance: Nobody wants a cargo box that contacts or prevents their hatch from opening. Measure from the center of the front crossbar to the nearest point on the rear hatch when fully open. With this measurement we can list the options that are compatible. Many newly designed Yakima and Thule models feature rearmost mounting hardware to maximize hatch clearance and allow for a better fit, while enabling you to carry longer gear like nordic skis.
Pro Tip: Bring your vehicle—or at least its specs—to our shop. We’ll help you find the perfect fit!
3. Budget Without Sacrificing Quality
Premium cargo boxes from Yakima and Thule are investments that pay off in durability, security, and sleek design. Here’s a quick breakdown:
Entry-level: The Thule Pulse or Yakima RocketBox Pro offer excellent quality at a more affordable price point.
Mid-range: Upgrade to models like the Yakima SkyBox or Thule Force XT for enhanced aerodynamics and added features, like dual side entry.
High-end: Go all out with the Thule Motion 3 or Yakima CBX or GrandTour for premium aesthetics and cutting-edge convenience.
Pro Tip: Keep an eye on our seasonal promotions like Black Friday, Boxing Week MAP breaks - or bundle deals to get the most bang for your buck with periodic free installation. Join our mailing list to get the inside scoop!
4. Prioritize Aerodynamics and Noise
A sleek, aerodynamic cargo box not only looks great but also reduces wind resistance, improves fuel efficiency, and minimizes road noise. Both Yakima and Thule prioritize these features in their designs, but models like the Thule Vector and Yakima CBX Solar take it to the next level.
Pro Tip: If road noise is a concern, rest assured we will exhaust the possibilities to ensure you’re getting the best box for you and your vehicle.
5. Installation Matters
A poorly installed cargo box can turn your dream trip into a nightmare. That’s why at Over The Top Racks & Accessories, we specialize in professional installations to ensure your box is securely mounted and properly aligned. Many Yakima and Thule models come with tool-free mounting systems for added convenience, but nothing beats an expert install.
Pro Tip: Let our team handle the hard part while you plan your next adventure so you can be confident in your setup, know how to operate everything - maximizing long term enjoyment.

How to choose the right rack for you | expert rack advice in kelowna, bc
When it comes to maximizing the transportation, organization and storage potential of your vehicle, few accessories are as versatile and essential as a roof rack. With 20 years of experience in the automotive industry, I’ve seen the transformative impact a well-chosen roof rack can have on a road trip, outdoor adventure, or daily life. However, selecting the right one isn’t always straightforward. Here are the key factors to consider when choosing the best roof rack for your needs.
determine specific needs
Start by identifying what it is you you plan to carry, now and for what potentially lies ahead. Different activities call for different types of racks:
Bikes: Look for racks designed specifically for your bikes, ensuring they have secure mounting systems and proper mounting mechanisms and capacity.
Kayaks or Canoes: Opt for watercraft-specific racks with padded cradles and tie-down points.
Luggage or General Cargo: A cargo box or basket offers flexibility and weather protection.
Skis and Snowboards: Racks with padded grips with locks are ideal for securely holding these items.
Knowing your primary use will help narrow your options.
understanding your vehicle’s cababilities
Not all roof racks fit every vehicle. Check your car’s specifications, including roof type:
Bare Roof: Requires a rack system with clips to secure to the body of the vehicle.
Raised Rails: These make installation easier and allow for a broader range of options, with rail grabbing racks.
Flush Rails: Requires proprietary clips that are custom-fit and designed for a sleek, low profile appearance.
Fixed Points or Tracks: Utilize pre-installed attachment points for a secure fit.
Consult your vehicle’s owner’s manual or a professional installer for guidance.
Consider weight capacity
Every vehicle has a maximum roof load, which includes the weight of the roof rack itself, accessories and gear. Exceeding this limit can compromise safety and damage your car. Check your vehicle’s roof load rating and choose a rack that accommodates your gear without exceeding the dynamic limit.
choose between temporary or permanent solutions
Permanent Roof Racks: Offer durability and a seamless look but require drilling as well as installation expertise. Ideal for frequent or heavy-duty use.
Temporary Roof Racks: Easy to install and remove, making them perfect for occasional use or a leased vehicle that can't be modified.
material and durability
Roof racks are made from a variety of materials, each with its pros and cons:
Aluminum: Lightweight, corrosion-resistant, and easy to handle.
Steel: Strong and durable but prone to rust if not properly maintained.
Composite Materials: Offer a balance of strength and weight but may be pricier.
Invest in a high-quality rack that will withstand the elements and the demands of your adventures.
aerodynamics and noise
Look for racks with streamlined profiles to minimize drag and ensure a quieter ride. Some models even include noise-reduction features, such as wind deflectors if necessary. There is no guarantee any given rack will operate in silence, often is has to do with the vehicle aerodynamics. Adding accessories can eliminate noise completely so it’s best to configure the setup in it’s entirety before adding a deflector or panicking if you have a noisy set of crossbars.
ease of use
Consider how often you’ll be installing and removing the rack. User-friendly systems with quick-release levers and tool-free installation can save time and effort. Not all brands offer this feature. If this is on your checklist, let us know and we can help find you the best solution.
budget
Roof racks range widely in price. While it’s tempting to go for the cheapest option, investing in a reliable, high-quality rack can save you money in the long run by preventing damage to your gear or vehicle.
safety and security
Ensure the rack has secure locking mechanisms to protect your gear from theft. Additionally, check for safety certifications, such as ISO standards or compliance with local regulations. If it’s locked to the vehicle or requires tools to remove the components are part of your vehicle and therefore covered under most insurance policies. Something worth looking into regardless.
